Free Gnanasara Thero
The purpose of this letter is to educate you, your government and people about the unfair charges against Bodu Bala Sena, it’s Leader Ven Galagodaatthe Gnanasara Thero and unfair imprisonment
During Portuguese, Dutch and British colonization many harassments took place to Sinhalese Buddhists for centuries in our country . Even after the independence many harassments continued to them in a different manner due to various forces and structures created by those colonial masters. Even the democracy and judiciary system never worked reasonably for this majority community. As a result of continuous struggles, various commissions were appointed since 1950’s to investigate problems faced by Buddhists although they were the so called majority. As most of these recommendations of these commissions were not implemented, Government of Sri Lanka had to appoint a Presidential Commission in 2001 during President Chandrika Kumaranathunga period and it’s report was published in 2002 when Ranil Wickremasinghe was the Prime Minister. They have identified many issues such as unethical conversions by evangelical groups, Islam Expansion, Destruction of Archeological sites and many other issues. Although many recommendations were made none of them were implemented. Even Commission report was not given due publicity and it was virtually hidden.

As the rights of Sinhalese Buddhists were not protected adequately due to various forces, Bodu Bala Sena was established to ensure rights of this ancient community, a tiny majority globally who protected Theravada Buddhism during over last two thousand five hundred years. As this organization became one of the powerful socio-political forces many hidden attempts were taken to destroy this movement and its leaders.
As some of the army intelligent officers were remanded unlawfully for a longer period manipulating police power, Bodu Bala Sena leader raised this issue at Homagama Magistrate court in 2016. Although this was a friendly request to judge at open court and there was a healthy conversation between him and the Magistrate , later it was manipulated by some officers of police and Attorney Generals Department complaining this small incident as he had committed a very serious offence of contempt of courts. According to usual practice this type of a case should have been heard before the same magistrate court , this case was heard before appeal court directly and given him 19 years of imprisonment for things he was not committed at all .
A video circulated on social media about the incident at courts clearly shows that these charges created against him maliciously to punish him so that he cannot actively perform his struggle to safeguard rights of Sinhalese Buddhists who are vulnerable due to various reasons.
We understand this is a politically motivated act manipulated by some sections of the government although we respect the judiciary. Our opinion is that he is a political prisoner and his human and civic right violated because of this manipulation.
Majority of Buddhist Monks and Buddhists feel that this imprisonment is unfair, and law was manipulated purposely by some elements to disturb this Buddhist Revival Movement.
As our country and your country shares a long history of assisting each other in protecting Theravada Buddhism, we humbly request your support to understand these grave concerns & issues faced by Buddhists in our countries and make necessary attempts & interventions to free Ven Gnanasara Thero who is facing very unfair imprisonment terms.
We request you to give us adequate time to educate your mission about 2002 Commission Report, problems faced by Sinhalese Buddhists and unfair imprisonment of Ven Gnanasara Thero.
