Rs. 200 m worth drugs imported from India

The Health Ministry has imported a consignment of drugs worth Rs. 200 million from India to meet the local demand.

These drugs will solve the prevailing shortage in state hospitals, said director of its medical supplies division Dr. Sarath Weerabandara.

The consignment comprises 39 different varieties of drugs, including several essential drugs, he said.

According to Dr. Weerabandara, the distribution of these drugs among hospitals has already been completed.

Meanwhile, the health ministry has decided to halt the import of thyroxin, a drug used in the treatment of disorders in the thyroid gland.

The State Pharmaceuticals Corporation has taken steps to produce this drug locally, said Dr. Weerabandara.
