More than 60,000 Sri Lankans have lost their livelihoods due to the world economic recession, a survey by the Labour Ministry has found.
Labour officers have conducted the survey at district level from June to December 2008, it said.
These job losers will be compensated after obtaining the necessary funding through a special cabinet paper, said the ministry.
In the first stage, those who had been earning less than Rs. 25,000 will be paid compensation.
A delegation from the World Labour Organization is due in the island soon to inquire into their plight.
