Ban Ki Moon wants progress in Sri Lanka's ex-child soldiers

Ban Ki Moon, secretary general of the United Nations, has asked the Sri Lankan government to ensure that children released by armed groups have access to care, protection and reintegration programmes.

A report by the UN chief has also called for the building on the progress achieved to date with the support of the world body and other parties.

He has stressed the government should ensure the identification, release and rehabilitation of all such children and their successful reintegration into society are given priority and implemented in accordance with international standards.

The UN chief has also called for more access of humanitarian agencies and the delivery of assistance to internally displaced persons.

Ensuring relevant care and protection for children separated from their families, and addressing high rates of malnutrition among the displaced children have also been mentioned in his report.
