Rights group calls for women's quota at local govt. Politics
Jan 11, 2010 2:03 PM · Noting that politics has a mere 1.8 per cent active participation of women, a women's political rights group has called for a precise quota for women in local government politics.
'Women's Representation in Politics' says in a statement that Sri Lankan women enjoyed universal franchise way back in 1931, when their counterparts in most countries were without that right.
However, the ensuing 78 years had done very little to guarantee their increased participation in politics actively, it says.
If one takes the country's political structure, women have a key role to play in local government politics, says the statement, as women have the ability to look at a different vantage point at most public problems that come across at that level.
The Local Government Act requirement that there should be at least a 25 pc women's representation by a political party at an election is not in practice, going by the results of past elections, it notes.
'Women's Representation in Politics' also points out in its statement that 'Mahinda Chinthana' policy of incumbent president Mahinda Rajapaksa too, allocates a 25 pc quota for women in local government politics.
