Private bus strike planned in South

Jun 28, 2010 3:01 PM · Private bus owners in southern province are threatening to strike indefinitely from July 01 if no fare hike is given as per the relevant national policy.

President of the Southern Provincial Bus Owners Association Chandana Soyza told 'Colombo Today' that buses plying between Colombo and destinations in the province would also stop their services.

He charged that the transport minister and the National Transport Board employees were listening only to the head of a certain bus union.

There are plans to get other private bus owners' support to the strike, said Mr. Soyza.

He said his association had later decided to change an earlier decision that bus fares would be increased only if there was an increase in fuel prices.

It would be unfair by owners of buses that ply short distances if no fare revision is effected, he added.

The privatization of the bus services seem to have done no good to neither to the traveller nor to the pedestrian. They either strike work for ticket price increase and drive at break neck speed and kill innocent bystanders. It is time to re-nationalise bus services as it should be treated as a service to the nation and not a profit making body.
