Gen. Sarath Fonseka arrested by military police

Feb 8, 2010 11:19 PM · Retired Army General Sarath Fonseka has been arrested by military police and will face a military tribunal, an official said.

He had plotted with the opposition, when he was Army commander and chief of defence staff, to topple the government of president Mahinda Rajapaksa, said Lakshman Hulugalle, head of the Media Centre for National Security.

He had also created divisions within the Army, said Mr. Hulugalle.

Gen. Fonseka was taken from his Colombo office this evening (Feb. 08), reports said.

According to Mr. Hulugalle, the government has evidence to prove the charges of conspiracy and dissension against the soldier-turned-politician, which will be produced before a military tribunal.

Gen. Fonseka unsuccessfully contested the January 26 presidential polls, which re-elected incumbent Mahinda Rajapaksa for a second term.
