Danuna's Hicorp International US didn't supply to defence ministry - Mangala
Jan 13, 2010 4:34 PM · Hicorp International US, owned by Gen. Sarath Fonseka's son-in-law Danuna Seneviratne, is not registered with the Sri Lankan defence ministry to supply military or any other equipment to Sri Lanka, said SLFP Mahajana Wing leader Mangala Samaraweera.
Speaking to the media at his party headquarters today (Jan. 13), Mr. Samaraweera said the company had not supplied even a piece of pencil for the Army.
Hicorp Pvt Ltd. and Hicorp International US are two different companies without any connections between them although the government was attempting to prove that it was otherwise, he said.
Speaking further, Mr. Samaraweera noted it was not a betrayal to obtain a US Green Card - which Gen. Fonseka has obtained after his wife in 2001.
Neither is it an offence for the common opposition's presidential candidate to give his son-in-law's official address as his place of residence in the Green Card, since he has no other house in the US, said the SLFP (M) leader.
Since Gen. Fonseka was branded a betrayer 10 days ago, his popularity has leaped considerably while his main opponent Mahinda Rajapaksa had suffered a reverse of fortunes for the worse with his mudslinging campaign.
Also speaking at the media briefing, MP Wijeyadasa Rajapaksa alleged the government had brought down at state expenses a former captain of the Army Upul Illangamge, claiming himself to be a close friend and relative of Gen. Fonseka, purely for a campaign against him.
The Sri Lankan embassy in the US had paid his airfare, and upon his arrival at Katunayake airport, he was taken to a hotel under special security by STF commandos, alleged Mr. Rajapaksa, and questioned Mr. Illangamge's importance to be given such a high level of protection.
If the government claims of any shortcomings in the defence ministry through a transaction with Hicorp International US are true by any chance, it is its secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse who should resign as per tradition, said the parliamentarian.
Had the alleged transaction actually taken place, it would have amounted to Rs. 30 million only, he said, and questioned what action the government has taken so far against those responsible for Rs. 150,000 million frauds exposed through his COPE report.
