Bob Rae deporting shows govt. has backbone - 'Divaina' editorial

Jun 12, 2009 3:32 AM · In yet another indication that this country has a government with a backbone, the Department of Immigration and Emigration and the Ministry of Defence have deported Canadian MP Bob Rae, says the editorial of today's (June 12) issue of 'Divaina' titled "Bob Rae Drama."

It says that it has been reported yesterday (June 11) that former prime minister of Ontario State in Canada and Liberal Party MP Bob Rae had been deported while attempting to enter Sri Lanka.

Usually, people of the American continent and most countries of Europe are permitted to obtain 'on arrival' visas at the immigration and emigration counter. But, Bob Rae on purpose had obtained his visa from the Sri Lankan High Commission in Canada to prevent attempts by Sri Lankan immigration and emigration officials against his tour.

However, the Department of Immigration and Emigration and the Ministry of Defence have deported Canadian MP Bob Rae to demonstrate that this country has a government with a backbone. One may think what harm would it cause had Bob Rae been allowed to travel a bit in Sri Lanka and go back home. This is what should be mentioned here. Bob Rae is the most dangerous Canadian politician who uses communalism for his politic advantage. An NGO operating here had been waiting to receive him soon after he comes out of Katunayake Airport and then he would have gone without much ado to the Wanni by the land route. That is not to sow paspalum or plant pumpkins. But, it is to tell to the world fabricated yarns that he had seen for himself the violations of human rights in war offensives in the Wanni.

What would Bob Rae have gained by such an act? Briefly, it is like this.

Ontario State of Canada is full of Sri Lankan Tamil people. As they have been living there for a long time, they have been given citizenship. It is from these people that funds are being raised for the separatist war in Sri Lanka. The Tamil movement in Canada is so strong that there are even Sinhalese there who contribute money for separatism in Sri Lanka.

So, every Sri Lankan Tamil in Canada is a vote. Politicians like Bob Rae tell them that they are fighting for an Eelam in Sri Lanka to obtain their votes. As the Eelam dream has been shattered now, Bob Rae has no other promise to give to these Tamil people at the next election. Therefore, he had hoped to come to Sri Lanka, travel around, go back to spread fabricated yarns to the European community as eyewitness accounts and tell to the Canadian Tamils that revenge had been exacted for Prabhakaran’s killing in a bid to save his neck.

To make a long story short, given below are some of the anti-Sri Lankan acts by Bob Rae recently.

1. He came here in 2004 and held a workshop in a hotel in Wadduwa, where he demanded a separate federal rule for northeast.

2. Alleging human rights violations in the Sri Lankan war, he found fault with the Canadian government of prime minister John Harper for doing nothing about it.

3. A few weeks ago, he said Sri Lanka was becoming a failed state.

The foreign ministry of this country has a responsibility to warn Sri Lankan missions abroad about visits to Sri Lanka by persons like Bob Rae. But, that is not happening. Canada is a country with the weakest federal system of governance in the whole world. Any of its states can secede whenever it wants. Bob Rae wants to create a similar situation in Sri Lanka.
